Sacramento NWR Jan. 2013

On Jan. 19, 2013 we took a day trip to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. In addition to all the birds, we were treated to a nice sunset.

  • A Greater White-fronted Goose (brownish goose with pinkish bill and white on the front of its face) on grasslands (1/19/2013, Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge)

  • A male Northern Shoveler (dark-green head similar to a male mallard, but with a wider beak and white breast) swimming with its reflection in the water (1/19/2013, Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge)

  • Large brownish raptor with yellow eyes and feet sitting on top of the dry reeds. This is most likely a 1st-year juvenile Red-tailed hawk with western light morph coloring (The Sibley Guide to Birds by David Allen Sibley, p. 122) (1/19/2013, Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge)
