  • A pica in the grass under the edge of a rock (8/29/2012, Diablo Lake Overlook, State highway 20, North Cascades National Park Service Complex)
  • Diablo Lake has a very distinctive aqua or cyan hue to the water, indicating that it is fed by glacial runoff. (8/31/2012, Diablo Lake Overlook, State highway 20, North Cascades National Park Service Complex)
  • It is common to see large polypores (members of the mushroom family) growing in the moist forests of Washington state. These bright-orange polypores and the green moss next to them are growing on a large log that used to be trail bridge crossing a creek.   • Wind-blown trees on Cape Flattery make a good foreground for the dark-blue Pacific Ocean and Tatoosh Island. Cape Flattery is the northwesternmost point of the contiguous United States. The lighthouse on Tatoosh Island was first turned on in 1857. (9/12/12, Cape Flattery, near Olympic National Park)
